A memorial is not something that most people think about until the need arises, and when that time comes most families find themselves unprepared for the factors involved in a memorial purchase.

The most important information that a family must know regarding the purchase of a monument or having inscription work done is that all cemeteries have rules and guidelines regarding size and type of memorials permitted, depending on the location of the burial plot. Church authorities will often limit what is permitted to be on the monument.

In addition to their rules and regulations, burial authorities have a schedule of fees for their services and the rates vary from cemetery to cemetery. These fees are paid by the burial plot owner to the monument dealer who is responsible to send his check, application forms and a sketch to their burial authority for acceptance.

Before you call or visit a monument dealer you should have the following information available.

  1. name of burial plot owner
  2. full name of deceased
  3. date of birth
  4. date of death
  5. location of cemetery or churchyard

Churchyard and cemetery regulations.
