War Memorial restoration.
The memorial was brought to us in a very poor state. The marble was a soft type and had been worn away over the years to leave the lead letters proud and loose
It was decided that the finish was to remain having a slightly weathered and aged look but cleaner - not polished. Cracks in the marble were also to be repaired.
The village of Lower Dunsforth had decided it was time to repair their War memorial.
We were to restore the marble inscriptions and to add a new tablet.
Local builders A J Hawkridge & Sons were employed to set it in a newly constructed stone
memorial (see below).
Along with restoring the marble, we were instructed to make a new tablet commemorating the 2nd World War.
It was decided that the new inscription was to
match the old style of lettering so we had to hand cut it to match the original. The type of inscription was the 'inlaid lead' method - a time consuming process.

Drilling hundreds of holes for the lead to grip - all drilled at angles. |
